What does it take to be accepted as an American? After 96 years of becoming "statutory" american citizens and 115 of becoming a non-incorporated territory of the United States we still have problems getting acceptance by regular americans. After serving in all American wars, after hitting ourselves a hundred times on a concrete wall hopping that Americans will notice us, they still think we are a foreign country.

Now to put the frosting on the cake, singer Mark Antony, born and bred in the United States has caused an internet uproar. Speaking and singing English fluently without an accent you can cut with a sissor, Mark A. was questoned when he sang God Bless America in New York. If he was questioned in New York, the most liberal city in America, what would of happened in the South or the central states?

NEW YORK — Apparently, some people need to be reminded that Marc Anthony is an American.

The New York-born singer of Puerto Rican descent touted his roots on "Live with Kelly and Michael" on Thursday after some people criticized his selection to sing "God Bless America" at this week's Major League Baseball All-Star Game, held in New York City.

In an interview, the Grammy-winning salsa star said that he heard people were questioning why a foreign-born person was singing the patriotic song. Anthony said he was born in New York and added: "You can't get more New York than me."

"Soy Puertorriqueno. Ciudadano de los Estados Unidos. Inmensamente orgulloso de ambas cosas."
- Luis Munoz Marin
^ an excellent quote that many people should take to heart.

Why do some morons and racists hate Puerto Ricans? Well because they are morons and racists.

Also the actions of pro-independence politicians like Carmen Yulin, Charlie Hernandez, etc tend to infuriate mainland Americans and because they are elected they thus present an image that many Puerto Ricans have the same anti-American beliefs. At the same time many people on the mainland do not understand the complexities of Puerto Rican politics. Many people on the mainland have also brought into the "Nuyorican = Democrat thus Puerto Rican = Democrat" not realizing that the Republican Party is actually quite powerful on the island. The statehood movement has by and large always associated with the Republican Party, in fact before 1967 the New Progressive Party was the Republican Party in Puerto Rico. The Rossellos, Pierluisi, and Romero Barcelo are the exception rather than the rule - the vast majority statehooders are national Republicans.

In all honesty pride in being Puerto Rican is no different than a Texan being proud to be Texan.

It needs only a vote by its citizens. But be it due to the lobbying, corporate influence, different taxes, or denial to accept English as the official language Puerto Ricans repeatedly voted to keep the comfortable status quo.

And the attitude of the rest of the USA towards PR will only increase as a result of this. When will Puerto Ricans make up their mind to join the club with all duties and rights coming along with it? Or drop out and become a tax paradise like the Cayman Islands. If the USA would push you to decide, they would be called all names in the books.

Be Christian
native English speakers with no foreign sounding accent.

Puerto Ricans aren't considered 'American" because u guys speak a different language than us. Different culture, etc.... yall are different. I think it's terrible feel like that, but that's the reality of it.. That's the "ideal" american....which is ridiculous.

In reality not at all true. Tell all the dark haired, brown eyed immigrants (legal as well as illegal) living in America as naturalized citizens and amnesty seekers who are Non-Christian and speaking English with foreign accents that they must be blonde with blue eyes. Poppycock!

As far as having/getting blonde hair? Anyone, male or female, regardless of ethnicity, race, or national origin can be a blonde anytime they wish to.

Best regards, sincerely

Blue eyes are increasingly rare in America-Wednesday, October 18, 2006

A century ago, 80 percent of people married within their ethnic group, Grant said.
Blue eyes -- a genetically recessive trait -- were routinely passed down, especially among people of English, Irish, and Northern European ancestry.

By mid-century, a person's level of education -- and not ethnicity -- became the primary factor in selecting a spouse.

As intermarriage between ethnic groups became the norm, blue eyes began to disappear, replaced by brown.

The influx of nonwhites into the United States, especially from Latin America and Asia, hastened the disappearance.

Between 1900 and 1950, only about 1 in 10 Americans was nonwhite. Today that ratio is 1 in 3.
The look advertisers want today favors honey-colored skin, brown hair, and green or brown eyes. The most successful models are coming from Brazil.
