Mike, so you're looking for someone to sail with, or you want to rent a boat? I'm not real clear on what it is you want here...I can DM you some info on someone who has a boat there that might be able to direct you more on where to find someone...a friend of a friend of a friend and all that jazz :-) We just moved back from STX a year ago.
Sam, I'm looking at moving down there within a few weeks, could I buy a SeaDoo like watercraft to jet around to the islands? If so what am I looking for license and docking costs?
You can't jet to the other islands on a SeaDoo...my goodness, your geography is WAY off! There is a ferry that runs between the islands and a lot of people don't even take that for the nausea factor. I can only imagine what it would be on a tiny spec in the ocean.
That idea isn't really practical at all. If you want to buy a SeaDoo to cruise from beach to beach on STX that may work, but if you're trying to head to STT....nope, not an option.
Seriously don't try jet-skiing between islands. I've taken several LARGE two-decker ferries between the Virgins and I found the sea is a very mercurial beast at times. 80% of the time it was calm or just slightly choppy and a jet-ski pilot with a calloused caboose and strong spine could take it. However, all year long small thunderstorms come up out of no where, the wind picks up to 30-50 mph at times, and even if it's just for half an hour or so you'll be thrown off your craft, blasted with rain and sea spray and loose all your headway with 6-8 foot seas. This is even on days with a weather forecast of sunny or partly cloudy skies. On really unstable weather pattern days, tropical depressions, etc .... much worse and/or duration of course. You would have to be VERY lucky to stay out of trouble. Even the very short St Thomas to St. John's run we got blasted and rocked one time.
