Transition to UI extensions is automatic in NJ -- you don't have to take any action.

As you exhaust one level of UI, NJ automatically reviews your account for eligibility for the next level that is available at the time. In your case, when you exhaust regular benefits, they will automatically process you for Tier I.

Around the time of your last claim on regular benefits, you will receive a written determination of benefits for Tier I -- which you should be awarded with no problem, assuming you remain unemployed and have not been disqualified from benefits for any reason (like not accepting a job offer).

The amount of your weekly payment will remain the same, and your UI account will be credited for 20 weeks of payments (Tier I runs for 20 weeks). The form you receive every two weeks is the same, and you file your claim the same way. The only change may be the day of the week on which you are instructed to claim benefits (for example, if you now claim benefits every other Monday, on Tier I you may be instructed to claim benefits every other Thursday).

Your regular benefits end on a Saturday; your Tier I begins the next day -- the Sunday after your exhaust your regular benefits.

If there is any delay in paperwork, the payments will be retroactive -- so there is no gap in benefits. BTW, NJ is usually very prompt with these extensions, so the paperwork should flow smoothly.
