Hello everyone,

I have a question that I hope someone can answer.

I just entered my 2nd benefit year and I believe I'm on tier 2. My situation allows for the entire 99 weeks (most likely), but let's say it ends at tier 4, which means I have about 6-7 months left in benefits.

By the way, I haven't worked since being let go from my job a little over a year ago.

Now, my question is -- if I take a temp job, let's say 2 months in length, what happens when it ends? Do I continue where I left off, or do they restart my benefits from scratch?

I'm in Illinois, if that matters.

I may be wrong, but it seems your tiers matter more than the weeks of collecting... meaning if you're still not through the tiers, you can actually collect for longer than 99 weeks. I'm basing this on my own situation (in CA), since I filed my original claim exactly 2 years ago - and I am still eligible for all 6 tiers, based on the fact that I've been working part-time through most of it. Thus I have extended my balance & time, and will be allowed to collect beyond 99 weeks. Does that make sense? As for working a temp job, I'm pretty sure you'd just continue UI where you left off once it (the job) ended. Not sure if you'd have to re-file at that point, but I know you HAVE to exhaust the old claim before you'd start a new one.

I think you can go beyond 99 weeks, but at a reduced benefit amount.

My TX UI only lasted 93 weeks then the money ran out.

You mean if I take a temp job now, my benefits will stop or pause where they are now (Tier 2), then when the job is over, my benefits will continue exactly where it left off?

Or will the benefits start all over when the temp job is over, just as if I never collected benefits before and lost a normal job -- standard 6 months, etc.?

Not true.

When you qualify for a new claim -- but have not yet exhausted your prior claim -- the order of payment of levels of benefits switches between the original claim and the new claim as follows:

1. Original claim - Regular state benefits
2. Original claim - EUC Tiers until new claim established
3. New claim - Regular state benefits
4. Original claim - All remaining weeks of EUC Tiers
5. New claim - All EUC Tiers for which you qualify
6. New claim - EB, if you qualify

Note that you can only collect EB once on claims that cross -- generally on the second claim.

If you do not earn enough on your temp job to qualify for a new claim, your prior claim can be reopened -- and you will resume collecting benefits where you "left off."

If you do qualify for a new claim, then your payments will switch between benefits from your new claim and from the original claim -- following the order listed in post #6 above.
