I'm not even sure how Christianity can be enforced at a State school like that in these modern and enlightened times - I'm sure that will change in NI, too.
Well, in my school RE was not essential and then when I went into year 11 it became essential. We have really strict religious RE teachers who probably campaigned like hell. I don't think we will not,not have prayers in State schools for a long time here because certain people will have a crap attack. (presbyterians).
I went to state schools and never once did they speak the Lord's prayer. Had lots of assemblies about bible stories, and we had to sing hymns in primary school, one of which did contain the words to the Lord's prayer but we sang it very rarely.
Most people in the UK are pretty apathetic when it comes to religion. They may say they are Christian but they aren't all that convinced in the divinity of Christ, they just have a vague belief in God that they haven't really thought about. Only go to church for weddings, christenings, and funerals. Those that go for Easter and Christmas are the most common real Christians, far fewer that go every week. Christian traditions are really just traditions for most.
Religion is so little-talked about that I know lots of atheists who have been asked to be godparents because so few go to church and know other people who they know as Christians that they could ask.
