Im thinking about going to Newcastle for an exchange program and I would like to know a little bit about the weather there. Im from Brazil and Ive never seen snow, so I think this "trip" would be a great opportunity to get to know it. So, how often does it snow in the city? Does it snow every winter (at least once) or sometimes you spend the whole year without any snow?
Ialso would like to know if all northern England has the same weather like Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool. Sorry about my english, as I said before, english is not my first language so I could have made some mistakes. Thank you in advance
Yes it is possible to have winter without any snow, because of the gulf stream snow in Britain is far less likely than it is in other Northern European countries. If you want gauranteed snow for the winter months go to North Eastern Europe, Germany or Poland, where I live in the UK we had very little snow from 1987 to around 2007 (my eldest daughter didnt get to play in any snow until she was 12!!) but having said that the last 3-4 years has had some winter snow for a time (whatever happened to global warming), the point is the weather is unpredictable in all of the UK and never holds any gaurantee's
I live in Leeds and I have never experienced a 'snowless' winter before. Even during the milder winters, snow is virtually guaranteed to accumulate at some point, however brief it may be. The past few winters have proven colder and snowier than usual, and Newcastle has fared well, and since Newcastle is usually snowier than Leeds, I would wager that they have never had a snowless winter either. Snowless winters have occurred further south, in Birmingham, for example, but never here, even 88/89 (one of the mildest winters) had some snow here. The south of England is a different story - they are more prone to snowless winters, they're not uncommon in London.

In my 16 years of Winters in London I only experienced one snowless winter and it wasn't really snowless.
Snow is guaranteed in Newcastle upon Tyne don't expect a raging blizzard though...
Snow is guarnteed. There has never been a year were we havent got lying snow.
North of leeds always gets snow and some parts of the north of scotland are practically snowy all winter.
Owen I can only guess that you are not very old!!! Snow is most definately NOT gauranteed! Perhaps in Northern Ireland but most certainly NOT in other parts of the UK!
