I just received my great kilt of the Stewart tartan.
My question is: What is the dimension of the great Kilt? Mine is 48" wide x 27' long, is this normal?

Did you know that a kilt has to be remade to shorten it... and only Highlanders wore the kilt.. but not the style of the ones now...

Our family were Highlanders who came to this country in 1740.

I was wondering if there was any other ways they use to cut and shorten their kilt lengths, pleat sizes, how many pleats were used. Any kind of info on setting up the kilt would be helpful. Or was it mostly based on personal preferences.

I think it would be far too difficult a job to try and shorter a kilt with so many pleats but Ill find out more for you.. but Id think a genuine kilt which is very expensive is the same length....

I know that when you lay it out on the floor, you measure the first flap (outer flap) from your elbow to your finger tip and the last flap (inner flap) should be the same. And, the pleating between the inner and out flaps width should be the same as the other two. So. that being said, with the Great Kilt being 27 feet long (the whole 9 yards). Do you have to use ALL that left over fabric to pleat with, or can you remove some of it (the fabric making it the length shorter) and make the pleats wider than the norm? This would lighten it up a bit and not make it so bulky in the back, basically making it 8 yards or 7 yards long. Again the dimensions of my Great Kilt is (48' x 27') or 48 inches wide by 27 feet long. The whole 9 yards.

The kilt is long enough for the excess to go over the shoulder. You get to use one of those beautiful kilt pins.

There must be the instructions on how to put it on correctly online. I've seen the directions, but it was in a booklet-- oh wait, check on Amazon and see if you can buy the booklet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilt_accessories In the old days in the Highlands kilts were very different... with tartan material gathered with a belt not with pleats like now.... it was then undone and used as a blanket also...
