I've lived in London all my life and though many say London is expensive I personally don't know how expensive because I've never lived out the capital.
Within the next 3 years I'm planning on moving to another Uk city (somewhere north of London not Brighton, Plymouth etc) so at of all the UK cities which is the cheapest? Specifically in the rent department where would I get the most for my money for rent?
As I do live here I know at least that the further north you go the cheaper it gets but just need more info...
Much cheaper. Really - the difference is striking. Take it from a person who spends a lot of time in London. The property market down there is beyond hope - completely overheated and overvalued. A Tokyo-like disaster waiting to happen.
Cheaper the further north you go is generally true, but not always - and you have to remember that wages are often lower as well. Rents in Leeds are lower than in Brighton, but people in Leeds earn less on average, so as a % of income it's not too different, and big cities are usually the exception to the rule - renting here is expensive, drinks are expensive, transport is expensive. One thing you will notice is that transport is actually more expensive outside of London (London has Oyster - we do not).
Houses around where I live are sky high expensive.. 5 bedroom houses here are priced at around £700,000+
I am not sure about rent, though.
In Norwich, I rented a 6 bedroom student house that cost me £250 per month for my room, not sure how this compares to London. Te actual cost of living is pretty much the same.. drinks and food in restaurants and bars are likely higher in London though. I can get £0.80 shots in Norwich and £2 doubles, £1.50 pints on some nights. In London a pint costs £4+ and a double over £5

Yes, I couldn't believe how expensive buses were in Portsmouth it was the first time I took a bus outside London in the UK.
If I decided to move into suburban Leeds renting a one bedroom flat what would be the rents (roughly)
Did you say that you were a trainee chef? If yes you could probably get a live-in job pretty easily almost anywhere once you qualify if that appeals to you. Probably works out as a good deal compared to paying rent.

Yes I was considering that but I can't seem find any examples online. The ones I've found are chefs in a hotel that live in the hotel, that's not what I want.

Depends on the area. You won't (or will struggle to) get a 1-bed flat under £500 per month in the nicer suburbs. The suburbs are always cheaper to rent than desirable central areas (especially the city centre).
I guess housing benefit would help in your case though.
