This is a two part question. The first part you've probably heard over and over again, why do you drive on the left side of the road when most of the world drives on the right?

The next question is why do some former English colonies continue to ride in the left lane while others ride in the right lane?

we have always driven on the left side of the road, and will continue to do so.
I cannot comment on what FORMER colonies do, that is up to them to decide for themselves.

It is custom to pass on the right, your sword is carried on your left hip and held with your right hand so when trouble arises you need to be able to defend yourself.
An ancient custom used by the Romans and the Greeks .... why should we change now ?

The question might be reversed and asked since so many were already driving on the left passing on the right why did America have to be different ?

Because we do.

Because they do.

All I wish is that some organisation with enough clout had the foresight to harmonise (yes spell checker, harmonise, because that's how we spell it!) this decades ago.

Unfortunately we've got to the point where it would be beyond belief how expensive it would be for everyone to move to the left.
Spoiler

Sweden did change a few decades ago, but if they had to do it now I'm not sure it would be affordable, given the increase in traffic since even then.

Ireland did a pilot exercise a few years ago, where they tried the change-over in stages, starting with heavy goods vehicles, but it didn't go well.

LOL at the iZe ..... I come up against it all the time. A friend (jokingly) told me it was so Americans could gain more points in Scrabble.

That explains it, then. Americans have never carried swords.

However, you use a lasso with your right hand, so it is better to have the area to your right be open.

The places that switched from left-sided traffic to right-sided traffic usually did so to fall in alignment with other right-sided traffic countries.

Interestingly enough, the US Virgin Islands drive on the left despite never being under British control

Why do some countries drive on the left and others on the right? - World Standards

We DID use to drive on the left. (And we did have swords too. How did they manage to have duels? With STICKS? lol) Apparently in the late 1700s men started driving wagon loads of goods, they sat on a horse at the back left and needed to see over to the right.

Not all former colonies still do, Nigeria used to drive on the left, but post independence it became unmanageable surrounded by former colonies who all drove on the right. Flipping across at every border crossing was ridiculous.

Also people were already driving a large number of LHD cars in Nigeria as they were a lot cheaper from what my folks told me. So the government switched..
