There is usually a reason that people begin to drink to that level.But a question;how do people that drink that much keep a job?
Because, it seems, they do their drinking on weekends.
The UK's per capita alcohol consumption is similar to others in Europe, but instead of spreading it out - drinking a little wine or beer with every meal - there is a trend for 'binge drinking', especially amongst the young.
Our drinking culture, I think, is partly to do with the 'indoor' mentality of the British social life, in part caused by the weather. Most Brits socialize with a beer or wine, or at the local bar/pub. Its the only country in the world I have been where it is acceptable to drink on your lunchbreaks, be hammered with work colleagues, or throw up in front of strangers!
As for the tax increases.. We are already facing rising prices for food and other basic things combined with a global credit crunch. It seems a strage time to increase taxes whilst the economy is slowing, and families will have a lower disposable income. Rising taxes on booze is not really an effective way of targeting binge drinkers, as people are rushing to the stores today to stock up on whiskey etc before the price rises.
