This movie, with Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte and John Heard, is all about Jack Keruoac and Dean Moriarty , and "wife", all trying to fit into postwar America, and the new, sprawling suburbs that emerged shortly after, in the SF Bay area. The opening credits are a homage to Levittowns across the nation, and this trio has the stereotypical neighbors like "Bob and Betty Bendix" living next door to them. Very interesting movie, about friendship, "freedom", and responsibility, or lack therof.

And the suburbs, of course.
