Close to half of Manhattan is pedestrian friendly shopping streets. When I'd lived in Long Island, I'd sometimes take the train into Manhattan to shop. Good selection, easy to get around from shop to shop without having to worry about driving and traffic and a bit more fun.
You're from Virginia, won't Arlington or Alexandria have pedestrian friendly major shopping streets? And I'd be really surprised if DC didn't
There is at least one "major" pedestrian shopping district in every metro area with all of the big department stores, chains and other independents all together in a small area. There are also more smaller commercial districts that are pedestrian oriented.
I don't think you find many pedestrian streets like Myeongdong, the kind which is closed off to vehicle traffic. If that's what you mean. They seem to be pretty rare over here. The American equivalent would be the indoor shopping mall which on the other hand are extremely common. Every city and suburb has at least one.
