Hello! My family & I have been looking to move for awhile now but our business, which is a blessing but has kept us stuck in California. We've been looking into the Heber/Midway Utah area we're conservative but not religious & worried our children will be outcasts in school because majority residents are mormon. We're looking for land & buildable property we want to create a homestead for us & our parents. We want to keep out of the inversion layer aswell. What is the school system like? How restricted are the gun laws in Utah? Overall we want as much advice & info on everything please thank you!!

I can't speak for the religious aspect because I don't live there, but as a non-mormon with dark skin, I've been treated very well by the locals every time I've visited.

Religion aside, it might be in your best interest to take a weekend trip out there for a bit of exploration to see if it's what you're looking for. I'm only saying this because it sounds like you're looking for a small rural town with clean air in the middle of nowhere and while Heber and Midway may appear to check off all the right boxes for you on paper, it may not be the case in person.

That little podunk town has seen a bit of expansion recently and I suspect the growth will continue. Don't cite me on this statistic since I'm just guessing, but I'd say the area has seen a 50-60% population increase in the past 5 years alone and the rural countryside is starting to look a little more suburban every year. As far as the air quality goes, there is a fog there in the winter. I don't know if this is regular fog or inversion, but it looks pretty similar to the fog in Salt Lake that everyone complains about.

As for gun laws, they're pretty lax. Follow federal laws and you're pretty much good to go.

Hopefully someone else chimes in with more info.

Since you’re looking into the Heber/Midway area, be sure to check out the Homestead Crater.

You'll be fine Heber/Midway has quit a bit of non-utah immigration and will be diverse enough. IMO if I had the $ and could work remotely 100% of the time (not commute to SLC/valley) this would be my first choice to live. The access to remote Utah mountains, Park City, Provo Canyon, and Jordanelle/Strawberry make it a highly desirable place to live. 10 years ago that area was a relative bargain but prices have risen 2-3x what the rest of Utah. Coming from Cali that might already be built into the equation for you.

Utah's gun laws are among the most liberal in the country.

One of the things on my bucket list has been to ride the "Heber Creeper", although the link you provided shows it by a different name, (Heber Valley Railroad) now.

Almost as good as Idaho's gun laws. But I do believe UT will go no permit required to carry concealed this year; but for 21 and older only; not for 18 and older.

"Constitutional carry" is a misnomer as all states restrict where carry is allowed. Utah allows open/concealed school carry with a Utah ccw permit while Idaho bans school carry completely.

I'd rather have permits. I used to like Idaho laws better than Utah because Idaho required a shooting test to obtain a permit while Utah does not, but now that Idaho has gone full retArdizona, I think Utah has taken the mantle as the state with the best gun laws.

That is super cool! Thanks for the information!

We are planning a road trip in Nevada, Utah and Arizona soon...are the roads open all winter up there in the Midway area?

How is Utah on hotels right now? Any restrictions?
