My family of 5 will be relocating to the NEK this summer. Both my husband and I already have jobs secured at Lyndon State College. What we are struggling with is where the heck to live! We will be coming from a urban/suburban area and we know this will be a very large lifestyle switch no matter where we live. We will be in Vermont for at least 6 years, likely longer, closer to 12 and forever if we love it!
Here is what we require:
Decent public schools for our children who will be in kindergarten, 2nd and 5th grades.
High speed internet
Some sort of restaurant scene. This can be a couple diners and a bar. We don't need a lot just a couple choices would be fine.
I need a k-8th grade school. High school is many years off for us. I did look at the Barre/Montpelier area when we visited. I think it would just be too hard a commute in the winter.
We're in Lyndonville....nice town, however we don't have chlidren and of my good friends who have kids coming up through the Town School, let's just say I don't see a whole lot of interest in academics from them. Granted what kid likes school, but usually out of 8-10 kids you find one who at least seems to show some academic promise (I'm trying to be nice here)......
My suggestions would be Waterford or Danville.
Waterford has a great little school. K-8. Everyone I know in that area has good things to say about the school. It feeds into St. Johnsbury Academy for high school. Waterford is the exact opposite of what you are used to though - very rural, no real town center. For restaurants you'll be driving to St. Johnsbury or Littleton. About 30 minutes to Lyndon State, could be less depending on where in town you are coming from.
Danville is a nice little community with a well regarded K-12 school. A couple good restaurants, a bakery, a nice town center. Population of about 2000. Joe's Pond in the summer for swimming. About 25-30 minute commute to Lyndon, again could be a little more or less depending on where in town you are coming from.
I know you said high schools are a ways off but both St. Johnsbury Academy and Lyndon Institute are independent schools and are fantastic. Neither town has a public high school so students are tuitioned in. So if you think you are going to stay in the area you may consider a sending town for one of these high schools.
