My wife, very young baby (just 5 months old), and I are thinking of moving out to the greater Burlington area (if you can call it that), and we've found a great property in Winooski that we can afford and looks great. However, it is more out in the neighborhood than in the much lauded downtown area of Winooski. (We currently live about thirty minutes outside of Burlington.)

The street we're looking at is ok, but it is less than 1/6 block away from Mallets Bay Avenue. We've heard that there is a significant amount of violence and drug problems rampant on that street. Think the cross section of Union St and Mallets Bay Avenue, close to the YMCA.

I know Winooski is in the midst of a lot of change, and that's really great. But I'm primarily concerned about the safety of my child and also if we wind up getting this property we'll probably have an extra small unit we could rent out. However, if no one likes to live in that neighborhood such as a young professional or student then it seems like a bad buy.

Thanks!

Buy it, move in, and change the neighborhood! Twenty years from now, you'll be amazed at how well you've done.

It wouldn't be the place I'd want to raise a young child. Vermont has so many better places that for the best interests of the child I'd go with one of those better locations.

For me personally I wouldn't feel unsafe in any part of Winooski, but I'm also a large person and I usually have a pistol on me too. I wouldn't trust some of those less than desirable characters with the safety of a child.

My step-son has two young kids there (3 & 5). They are not in the school system-and probably won't be because they are being home schooled. My step-daughter used to also live there with her daughter (now 12) but they have moved to South Burlington mainly to change schools. My granddaughter had a problem with a girl at school and the issue couldn't be resolved so my step-daughter thought it would be better to pull her out of that school so they moved.

That is all I can tell you-other than Winooski has a great Thai restaurant.
