Since this is a gaming forum, you should know, that some of the games made for XP which may have worked in 7, will not work in 8.1. So I do not recommend it.
I have 8.1 (and still have computers with 7 and XP that I use), I have to say I don't "get" the touch interface on a desktop or the metro screen. It seems like windows is trying to adapt to the simplified Android/Ipad interface, not realizing that if there customers wanted an Android tablet, they would buy one. Plus who is going to be awkwardly reaching over their keyboard and mouse to touch there monitor?
If I want Windows XP games i'll use my other computer, which is Windows 7.
Windows 8.1 is so different from Windows 7 it's as if they were dreamed up by totally different people. Perhaps they were, with the group devising 8.1 being in an asylum for the mentally ill. It is more confusing than any OS Microsoft has produced. If a person doesn't have an Iphone or similar, so many aps are devoted to those phones which adds to the problem for me. I would have an Iphone, but I cannot justify buying one since I have no use for it at all. I have a cell phone for the car and it stays in the car. I never use it. There's no reason to use it. I know this is an old thread, but it's not ancient.
It takes much more time navigating Windows 8.1 than any other OS I've had and I started with Windows 98, but before that, I had a computer that didn't have windows.
I've had to search to find where to log off at night when shutting down. However I ask the question, it's taken a different way and I must try again.
I recently got a laptop with Windows 8.1 on it. At first I hated it but after some tweaking it's bearable. I wouldn't recommend upgrading from Win 7 though, there just isn't enough new stuff to justify it. Wait for Windows 10 in 2015.
Windows 8.1 is a great upgrade from Windows 7. However, the difference is minimal. It's a minor version difference.
Windows 8.1 is much faster to navigate as it's all search-based (similar to OSX). It's also more stable and has better support for high resolution monitors.
If it was a free upgrade for you, it would be a no brainer. If you're going to pay retail for it, I'd recommend waiting until Windows 10.
