I felt a rumble or shaking, not anywhere near a panic here. I guess since we are in the mountains earthquakes are not a big concern in the western part of the state, although they have happened. I am glad the quake didn't occur under a heavily populated city such as Washington or New York. Scary scenarios during these tough times!

A 5.9 magnitude quake is a pretty good size quake. The general rule of thumb is anything above 5.0 is a concern, and anything below that is fun.

There does not appear to be any damage, just a lot of rattled nerves, which is understandable considering that the east coast does not normally get quakes.

School in Louisa is closed tomorrow. Students were sent home on their regular buses. My daughter attends the middle school in Mineral. I have been told that there is some damage at the high school. CNN is reporting that the Mineral Post Office is too unsafe for anyone to enter.

I live near Zion Crossroads which is on the west end of the county. It was frightening. The house shook and the noise was very loud. At first I thought there had been an explosion.

Dominion Resources has reported that the North Anna nuclear facility is undamaged, but running on its backup generators.

Hopefully no one was seriously hurt or killed in the earthquake.

I was at work here in Charlottesville. There's a railroad right next to us that is very busy, and a construction firm right next door with big dump trucks. At first I thought it was one or the other making more noise than usual. But it kept going on, and my co workers and I just looked at each other and quickly went outside where nothing would fall on us. People from the other businesses were outside too and were like, What the eff was that?! If it wasn't so unnerving, it would be pretty cool! We had one like this I think in '06 that was felt up into Delaware. Then it was the same exact scenario as today. Hopefully no one got hurt!

A 5.9 quake is unnerving. Anything above 5.0 is worthy of concern. Anything below 5.0 is considered "fun." How the quake felt will tell you something about the ground where you are standing. If it felt like waves, or an undulating motion, rather than a sharp, abrupt jerk, then you are standing on sedimentary soil comprised primarily of loose dirt and gravel. If it felt like a sharp jolt, then you are standing on bedrock.

I was at school (in Washington D.C.) when I felt the earthquake. For a second my interpreter's signing felt funny and I was wondering why she was signing funny when I felt the ground shake. There is always construction going on at our school so I didn't think anything of the noise and then I thought a crane had fallen on our building or something. She told me to duck under the desk but then we were told to evacuate the building. Then she told me that all the buildings were evacuated, not just ours, so that's when we realized it was something bigger. I had no idea an earthquake could happen here! I'm just so glad I had an interpreter with me to tell me what's going on cause otherwise I would have been freaking out!
