Hello everyone, I am 23 and currently working in Cleveland at a marketing firm. My boyfriend is an automotive technician. We are looking to move somewhere south and close to the beach. I was looking at Virginia but didn't know if I would be able to find a job in graphic design. Preferably working at an ad agency or small design firm. (I am assuming my boyfriend can find a job pretty easily anywhere.) Does anyone know which city, if any, offers the most job opportunities in my field? We really don't want to face another winter in Cleveland!

Depends on what you want to do with your "graphic design". There are not alot of options in Va. Really small, mom & pop stuff is around.....but for 'real' agency work then you need to look at NoVa OR Richmond. Finding a small agency will be easier than finding a "design firm"....unless you want to work at a "sign masters" type shop ;-) Not really enough work to justify a staffed 'design firm'.
There are alot of freelancers and independants floating about that do make a living,.......but again as far as finding a design firm job that is full-time w/benefits?.....not gonna be easy at all.

Best of luck.............

Richmond has a decent cluster of firms in advertising and graphics design... the one that pulls the most gravity in Richmond is Martin Agency, known for its Geico Gecko and Caveman ads, the new Wal-Mart campaign, UPS Whiteboard ads, etc... they are one of the heavyweights in the advertising world...

this link might be a good place to start:

I publish a few resource guides that might be useful:

Richmond, Virginia PR, Publicity and Marketing in Richmond VA, Public Relations Firm Showcase

Richmond, Virginia Web Design, Web Designer in Richmond VA, Web Site Design Showcase

Hope this helps.
