Thoughts? Does this sound reasonable? Is it enough to restore trust in the company?

WASHINGTON -- Volkswagen AG and U.S. officials have reached a framework deal under which the automaker would offer to buy back almost 500,000 diesel cars that used sophisticated software to evade U.S. emission rules, two people briefed on the matter said today.

After months of deliberations, it's said that Volkswagen and the U.S. government have finally come to an agreement over how VW will compensate American customers affected by the ongoing diesel emissions scandal. German newspaper Die Welt reported Wednesday that VW will pay affected U.S. customers $5000 each, per a Reuters report.

Damn. Wish I had picked one up. I almost pulled the trigger on one but by the time I was done doing comparisons and ready to pull the trigger sales were on lockdown.

Would be nice to have an incredibly fuel efficient and fun to drive Golf TDI and get a $5k check. I would not take the buy back or get any "fix" done.

Might have to get the "fix" done, whether you can undo it is another thing. They could make it mandatory to register it or something.

Wonder how big VW's losses are going to be buying back 500,000 cars.

Maybe in California. Doubtful anywhere else.

Most TDI newer than 2007 are worth more than $5000 before the scandal. The deal sucks for some that paid well more than that and will be giving their cars back to VW. If I had a 2010+ TDI I would not accept the deal unless I am given an equivalent non-TDI vehicle.

"Owners selling back their vehicles will get an additional cash payment on top of receiving the estimated value of the vehicles from before the emissions scandal became public in September 2015."

Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Almost every TDI owner bought it because they wanted the diesel engine option. So I think most of them will choose to keep the affected vehicles, and most of those will refuse the software fix that will reduce engine performance and increase fuel consumption. The exceptions will be in California, and maybe a few states like California, that won't renew the registration unless the fix is in.

If I had one here in Montana, I would not allow them to buy it back, nor would I allow them to perform the "fix"!

I have a 2012 TDI......I really like it but I'm going to wait and see what the offer actually is. Lots of rumors.

While I really like my car if they pay retail plus $5k, they can have it.
