Hi!
My wife and I are currently living in DC and just started looking to purchase a house. While we know that Takoma Park is great, can be pricey and a bit out of price range, we found a 1,400 sq ft newly renovated house on the MD side of Takoma. However, it's located right at New Hampshire & Eastern Ave (Sligo Mill Rd to be exact). The house looks great but the price (bellow 200K) is a bit too low for TP. We would love to put an offer but we don't know anything about this particular area and keep going back and forth. How safe is this part of TP? What do you think about this area? We don't want to loose the house but at the same time we don't want to make the wrong decision. We really appreciate your comments and advice.
Thank you!
Max

The major problem I see with that section of Sligo Mill Road is that it faces the backs of the parking lots of businesses on New Hampshire. I imagine that garbage is stored and picked up back there, and I could be noisy and smelly in the wee hours of the morning. Traffic on new Hampshire is busy during rush hours also.

As for safety, I would check for police reports. There is an online tool for crime reports (can't remember the name now.)

I'm somewhat familiar with the area. I think it will feel safe to you, even if the crime looks high. The "lower" price is because it's not in the higher end areas of TP and it's closer to the commercial areas and NH Ave.

Jump on the deal! Your children will attend Montgomery school system, which has a great reputation in the area. I grew up on the Takoma DC side. And Takoma, Maryland is just right around the corner. I moved out of DC for school in 2004, and I recently returned. Takoma, Maryland is more diverse now. It is safe and close the city action. I can talk from first hand experience, because my younger brother just rented apartment close to the intersection you are referring to. We as a family supported his decision, because it is a peaceful enviornment, quiet in the evening, and reasonable in price.

Everybody, thank you for all your replies. We bought this place and loving it a lot! Takoma Park is such a great little town and so close to all the actions in the city. Thank you again!
