I'm somewhat familiar with the area. I think it will feel safe to you, even if the crime looks high. The "lower" price is because it's not in the higher end areas of TP and it's closer to the commercial areas and NH Ave.

Jump on the deal! Your children will attend Montgomery school system, which has a great reputation in the area. I grew up on the Takoma DC side. And Takoma, Maryland is just right around the corner. I moved out of DC for school in 2004, and I recently returned. Takoma, Maryland is more diverse now. It is safe and close the city action. I can talk from first hand experience, because my younger brother just rented apartment close to the intersection you are referring to. We as a family supported his decision, because it is a peaceful enviornment, quiet in the evening, and reasonable in price.
