Does the Maryland side of the DC metro seem less transient than the rest of the metro?

Occassionally I hear about people moving into the DC area, better their careers, and than move back out again.

Is there more of a second generation, third generation, etc. to the Maryland side?

I know of some people who are 2nd-3rd gen. Mostly when I was in HS there were some 2nd gen. Some long-time family friends (think near their 80's). we know of have a 3rd or 4th generation still here. By here I mean Montgomery County. I'm not sure if we are less transient but I also know my CC prof is 3rd gen living in Fairfax County.

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but I will say that Montgomery County has very strong ties to the N.Y.C. area, partly due to its Jewish population as well as embassy diplomats. Montgomery Countians often travel back and forth to N.Y.C.

By contrast, Prince Georges and Charles Counties and the black sections of D.C. are full of blacks with roots along the railroad line of Eastern North Carolina and white people who migrated from the coal fields of mountainous Pennsylvania. One constantly sees decals on cars, and T-shirts, advertising the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State Univ. as well as colleges in N.C.

Historically the No. Va. suburbs had many military jobs including the Pentagon and numerous other bases. Although the Md. suburbs also have several military bases and sites as well.

Very true I would also add that there are long settled populations of Blacks, Whites and even Native Americans in Southern Maryland. It wasn't long ago that PG still had a thriving tobacco market. A colleague of mine, moved to Upper Marlboro from upstate NY in the 70s and she recalls how in high school they let the kids out of school so they could help pick crops.
