I am moving to MD to work at Fort Meade. I want to live near a Metro Stop because of family visiting from DC or going into DC on weekends. I have been scouting out areas around Fort Meade and like the Hyattsville area assuming I can find an apartment. Is it crazy to consider living that far from Fort Meade? I am checking on transit options but have a car and would most likely drive. Mapquest says it is only 25-30 minutes away but that is probably without regard to traffic. I've looked at Odenton. Nice area and close to Fort Meade but it seems so remote. Any thoughts?

My thoughts are how often, really, is your family going to visit and go into the city? Or do they live in DC and would come to visit you? As far as going into weekends you can always drive to a Metro stop and go in from there. Assuming it's not totally shut down for maintenance.

Much of your drive will be against traffic so that estimate of time is likely close. Of course, an accident can really muck things up.

Odenton is only "remote" if you've never lived anywhere but an urban area.

I'd bet that a 25-30 minute commute is below the average commute for this area. 95 towards Colombia isn't bad during the mornings, idk about BW Parkway though...I avoid it as much as possible bc it is so unpredictable...the smallest thing can put you in stand still traffic

I've lived in Hyattsville or the nearby areas for 5 years an bought my house here, so I love it and there are distinctions from Greenbelt, but you could get a bit closer to Fort Meade by living in Greenbelt and still get to the metro and what not.

Would your job require you to be on-call? If so, it would be better to be closer to Ft Meade. It may seem remote, but it is civilized suburbia with shopping, restaurants, entertainment, etc.

Living in Hyattsville or Greenbelt is not a bad option, and you would be doing a reverse commute. Also look into where you would have to park; it might add a 10-15 minute walk before you get to your workplace.

Hyattsville to fort Meade is not a a bad commute -- no where near the worse commute one could have in MD. So to answer your question is it "crazy" to live in Hayattsville and work at/in Fort Meade?" No it's not. I bet plenty of people do that.

It's not the closest you could live to FM -- but it's not the farthest either. So it doesn't have any down sides really. a 1/2 commute is more than reasonable in this area.
