I visited Washington for the very first time yesterday and was rather impressed. I was on a tour bus and we stopped at Pentagon Centre. I didn't get to see a lot of Arlington since I was on a bus, but from what I was able to see, it seems like a really cool place, but I also get the feeling it's not cheap to live. If I were to move to NoVa, would I be able to find an apartment in a good area for less than a grand a month? Not necessarily in Arlington, but in the general area. Also, the closer to a train line, the better.

Nope.

Unless you want roommates.

I'd look at Richmond. Not that far from Northern Virginia and still a relatively decent sized metropolitan area. A thousand isn't a lot there either but it will go a lot farther than it will in Northern Virginia. If you want to experience DC, it is only a few hours away. I would take a train though, but that's just me.

DC itself you're looking at least around $1,700, and that's probably a small studio. The suburbs aren't much cheaper, and some may even be more expensive depending on the location.

you wouldn't have to go as far as richmond. you could get a decent place in woodbridge in the 1200-1400 range. farther south to fredericksburg would be 800-1000. but the catch is the traffic. I95 from fredericksburg to woodbridge is typically a parking lot the whole way. especially weekends in the summer.

No, not even close. A grand will not get your own place in this area.

As others have mentioned, if you want your own apartment in a nice area in NoVa (or really anywhere in NoVa, although if you look at the apartment websites, some results come up for < $1000 although they aren't in nice areas), you won't be able to find anything.

If you are okay with renting a "room," there are plenty of options in NoVa for <$1000. I just did a quick search on craigslist "rooms and shares."
