Any hints or helps appriciated. Position is near columbus circle. I currently live in Delaware and would only be interested in renting. I am putting together a budget so I can negotiate a salary and I need to know what prices hence the need for area suggestions.
I don't mind driving to a metro station. I have a car and don't have a problem with driving. An hour commute is fine.
I prefer the north east of the city so commuting back to DE won't be that much of a headache (partner and house staying in DE for the time being)
In my 30s, area with some nice parks and activities for a dog. I don't need major party sceane, but close enough if I wanted a night out in the town on a Saturday night it's not 2 hrs.
Budget: When I was looking at a previous job my maximum payment was 950 so. . .I could maybe go higher but I really don't want to. I don't mind the longer commute since it will be a shorter drive to Delaware.
Please no flames or fighting. Thank you for the help.
A natural place to look would be along the upper end of the Red Line, between Silver Spring and Glenmont. Silver Spring would be the best overall in terms of amenities, but also the most expensive (although eastern Montgomery County tends to be more affordable than the western side.) If you're "near Columbus Circle," I assume that means that your job is near Union Station, which is on the Red Line and very convenient from Silver Spring and points north.
Your $950 monthly budget will most likely have to be bumped up by a couple hundred a month. Not because you can't find any 1BRs for that price, but because the complexes or buildings those apartments will be in will likely not be particularly pleasant.
Please also be aware that most apartment complexes in the city or in an urban suburban area like downtown Silver Spring are going to charge you a high amount just to have a parking space. My complex in Chevy Chase DC charges $125+ depending on whether you are in the covered or uncovered part of the lot. This is one reason alot of people who live in the city don't drive.
I, too, would suggest going Silver Spring and going a little further out so they won't charge you to park, but understand even a studio is going to probably run you at least $1100/mo. I might also suggest looking into one of the small buildings in Takoma Park, MD as you can sometimes find reasonable rates there. You won't have a gym or a pool, but you will have a fairly safe, quiet neighborhood that has a lot of green for your dog.
It's a 2 block walk from the Glenmont Station, and there's a shopping center across the street. For peace of mind, there's also a police station situated next to the complex itself.
Affordable rent, and the neighbors tend to mind their own business. Parking is free, but depending on which side of the complex you're on, immediate availability might vary.
Used to live there, but it was so remote from everything (end of the red line) that I couldn't take it any more.
Yeah, remote is not a major issue for me. Since most of my time there will be 95% devoted to work, school and my dog. Just once and a while, if the honey comes to visit, we can go to a nice dinner and pub. I will check out the places you suggested. Keep em coming and thank you! Oh and my budget has gone up to 1100 That should make some of you very happy . I am not really interested in living IN DC, since every weekend I will be driving to Delaware. Not a nice commute.
It would not be unreasonable to negotiate based on a budget of 2k or more for housing (including utilities and parking space) even in those communities. Whether or not you spend that much is a different issue, of course.
