Hi, I am moving to the DC area in January. I will be working at at the Air Force Base in Anacostia. I have heard that southeast DC (including Anacostia) is pretty sketchy.
I am trying to figure out where might want to live. I am from Houston so crime is nothing new to me, but at the same time I am cautious about the neighborhoods I walk around in.
I would prefer to take the metro to and from work, however I think the Anacostia station is pretty far from where I will be actually working. I hate sitting in traffic, but my work hours will be 6am-2:30pm. Will traffic be bad at this time?
Bottom line, can you please offer me suggestions about what neighborhoods are worth checking out (keeping in mind that I will be working at the AF Base)? I have budgeted about $1200 for rent.
Try Alexandria, VA or Fort Washington-Accoccek MD...All are pretty much a hop skip away. Yeah Bolling is on the edge of a tough neighborhood and your best bet would be commuting to and from work.
The times you picked aren't too bad with traffic and you'll be okay their, especially if you pick the cities I recommended.....

Yea, i'm agree with the previous post. I'd go for Fort Washington more than Alexandria mainly b/c you dont have to cross that WW bridge which can be unpredictable. With your hours traffic won't be much of a pain even crossing the WW bridge w/ no accident. Basically the case with PG county is the further away from DC you go the safer you will probably be espically bordering SE DC.
Agreed...not having to cross the bridge is a plus at any hour, but it's typically at least not so bad at 5:30 in the morning. Might be a crap shoot at 3:00 in the afternoon. On the MD side, and assuming those work hours hold, even going down to Waldorf would be doable. It's a little further out, but there are more amenities there than in most other areas.
As for Bolling, the base itself is as safe as anyplace. But outside the gates and across 295, there is some troublesome turf. Anacostia south of the river just isn't an A-1 area, no matter how you slice it. But if you play your cards right, you'll never have to interact with it.
Fort Washington is very safe and lots to do in the near future with the National Harbor being built, definitely a great place to live in! I work as a Global IT Consultant and my husband works with the FAA, and we love this part of DC...took a lot of finding the right neighborhood that is just 20-25 mins out of DC. Great place!
