Hey everyone,

There's a chance that I may be relocating to the DC area in 5-6 months and will be looking to rent a 2-3 bedroom apt/house.
Our tastes are like many who live in the area - walkable to coffee shops, great ethnic dining (not Applebees/Pizza Hut type places), metro, etc.. We have a toddler so safety is also a concern.
In DC, like most popular large cities, income tends to dictate where someone lives more so than anything else. As of right now, we are a one income family and if my wife stays unemployed we'll be able to swing around $2,000/month for rent. I've lived in Falls Church so I know $2k doesn't get you in a 2BD Georgetown, Dupont, Columbia Heights, VA Courthouse Metro (our ideal landing spots).
My wife is more than willing to work but only has a few years of office experience. What she does have however is a Master's in Public Administration (MPA) and she speaks multiple languages fluently. Her native tongue is Russian, her english is perfect, and she also speaks German.

So naturally I'm trying to leverage her skill set to maximize her income potential. If anyone can recommend companies/recruiters for her to work with that would be great. Oh, and this will be for 2 years, thats why we aren't buying a residence.

On a side note, while it would be great to live in one of the areas mentioned above, if there are areas that have that walkable feel to them and are under 30 minute commute to DC feel free to let me know. I am more familiar with VA, but I'm okay with MD OR DC...

Is your wife American and where did she get her MPA, because she could get some temping done in the state department. Her best bet are temp agencies or sign up for Bradtraverse.com, which is a decent site for international development crap. The city is filled with people like her, but they end with some sort of job. Silver Spring is a decent area, with a walkable enviroment and it will take you 20 minutes or so to metro into the city. The Van Ness to Frienship heights area also is good and can get you a large one bedroom and I have seen two bedrooms there as well for around 2K.

The best time to move is now, because there are deals, but once summer comes and a new turnover of students arrive in the city, rent skyrockets. Apartment that were being advertised for 2K, become 2.5K.

Well your wife sounds like a lot of DC people, so this is definitely the right place for her skills. Finding a job may depend on how well you network and if you already know some people. I would start with a temp agency and go to as many Russian events as possible (maybe she could meet someone that might make use of her language skills). Where did she get her degree?

She got her MPA from University of Colorado. I'll look at temp agencies.. with the US gov being entrenched in a sequester I'll try to stay hopefull....
