Planning on renting a house in North Beach, MD for a week in July. While in the area, we plan to head into DC on 2 or 3 different days to see the sights and visit the different museums. Yes, I understand July weather can be a bit icky .

Anyhow, I just wondered what are the best days to head in or avoid DC. We'll likely take public transportation on two of the days, and drive in on one (as we'll bring our dog one of the days).

Also, any recommendations on anything to see and do while in DC or Annapolis (maybe attractions/restaurants that are under the general radar) would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sunday is for sure the best day to drive into DC because you don't have to worry about rush hour traffic and also because in the vast majority of cases you can park on the street unlimited and for free (as opposed to other days of the week when there are time restrictions for parking and meters in effect)

I think the Iwo Jima Memorial is the most underrated memorial in the DC area. Also has great views of DC.

As for restaurants, there are a lot of institutions that are must trys like Founding Farmers, Ted's Bulletin, Matchbox, and Old Ebbitt Grill. They're all conveniently close to most of the tourist attractions.

Bens Chili Bowl is overhyped so I wouldn't go out of your way for it FYI.
