Everyone, thanks for your attention. Right now I find two apartments within my budget. But it is hard to make a decision. Would you give me some advise. here are the details:

*works in Howard University hospital
*I will talk walk or ride bike to work
*Married and have a 6 month old son, wife does not working now

My main concern is safety, because my working hours may vary from 5 am to 11 pm
The first option is a located 3rd st NE & V st NE; another one is located 3rd st NW & R st NW.

thanks again.

The one in NW is closer to Howard University and a better overall location. Neither neighborhoods are that great, but they are not absolutely horrible either.
My advice though is you may want to give a budget as well, you never know what's out there.

Definitely the NW one and bike don't walk. Walking wouldn't be bad in daylight but I wouldn't walk through there late at night/early in the morning.

Thank you for replying. Our budget is $1400-$1500, it 's really hard to find a one bedroom apartment within this budget in DC. We have been looking for a month now.

You have other options if you look into public transit routes, in particular bus routes.

For example there are apartments in Takoma, Petworth, or Brightwood where you can take a bus or metro to Howard University Hospital, the 70/79. There is a bus that goes straight down georgia ave that stops right in front of Howard University Hospital. Your options are not as limited as you think, and that bus route runs pretty much non-stop. Takoma is a safer neighborhood, especially at night. Not that truxton circle is that bad. But be aware your options are probably more expansive than you realize.

With that being said, the NW address is still probably your best option.

Unless there's a really compelling reason to go with the NE apartment (it's twice as big, it's renovated), the NW one is far closer and in a safer neighborhood. (And, if you're biking, there's not a giant hill in between.)

But, for the long term, take Sonic's advice and look a bit further up Georgia Avenue. Those buses really do run almost all day:

Take the 3rd & R, since you can basically walk or bike to work from there. No transportation costs.

Live in Takoma Park MD, get a one bedroom for $1000 and.take public transportation to work. Or you could take the savings and put it towards a car.
