I usually ignore advertising but this time responded to WaPo, telling them that they're wasting their resources trying to sell me a subscription. Big Mistake. WaPo interpreted this reply as a request for their Sunday only paper. Shoulda just thrown their advertising away.
And so every Sunday the WaPo is dumped at the mailbox. Sent the circulation dept. both an email and USPS mail to cease-and-desist but they ignored my order and kept on delivering .... along with a bill. Further email to WaPo was likewise ignored.
Finally got to talk to a human today, an accented-lady who whispered. Very hard to understand. According to her though, records show that I requested delivery on the enrollment form on which I told them that they're just wasting their resources. I gave no indication on this form that I wanted to subscribe. Just the opposite. Later in the discussion she said I requested a subscription via phone! Huh?!
The upshot is that they will cancel Sunday deliveries, but whether I must pay for the papers already delivered depends on a "specialist" -- whatever *that* means, apparently someone above her pay grade. So my fate is in the "specialist's" hands.
As much as I like the Washington Post's reporting and content, their membership/subscription tactics are scummy as all hell. They used to call me every day asking if I wanted to sign up until I just memorized their number and would hang up on them within one ring.
Yes the print papers are faltering. It will be odd that in our lifetime the Post or Times will cease to exist.
I could see the Post surviving if only for the fact that it has some prestige nationally and internationally as a US newspaper of record, and that it has Jeff Bezos, one of the wealthiest men in the world, as its owner. I'm not sure what his plans for the paper are, but I assume he didn't drop a quarter of a billion on the Post just to see it gradually wither away.
I do think we're getting pretty close to the online-only era of newspapers though.

Complained to the BBB and the DC Ofc. of Atty. General. Responding to the latter, the WaPo apologized for any misunderstanding and no payment is due.
