Or in this case, "Stop parking in front of my house on a public street". Older DC residents clashing with the new DC resident culture. Last week it was about bicycles and bike lanes. This week...car sharing with those tiny Car2Go vehicles!
This happened in upper NW along Silver Spring, MD border. This news item sparked 200+ comments on Prince of Petworth site.
Stay tuned for next week's episode when older, black DC folk battle the hipster, yuppie gentrification crowd over the emergence of new brew pubs getting liquor licenses in the neighborhood.
So let me get this straight. The people who can't afford a car and share rental of tiny little cars in public space are the evil rich people in this scenario, and the people who likely own both a full house and a car while trying to claim public space as their own are the oppressed victims?
You sure abandon your socialist sharing ideals quickly. I can't actually take any of the beliefs you spout on here seriously anymore. You stand for nothing but defending the gentried land owners.
To the contrary, I think it's ridiculous for a home owner to slip threatening notes under the windshield wiper when someone has the legal right to park a shared car on a public street.
The point that I was making is that the culture-clash between older, black, long-term residents and the younger generation of predominately white transplants continues in all corners of DC. The conflict is reaching absurd levels when residents post "don't park your Car2Go in front of my house or else" threats.

I know that neighborhood. Majority homeowners are black. Most users of Car2Go sharing tend to be white. I did the simple guess here.
A lot of DC neighborhoods with a significant white population are majority Black. In 2010, the census tract in question (16) was 24% white. I'm sure that number has trended upwards over the past four years. If we were talking about some neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago that are 0% White , that would be one thing, but I don't think it's reasonable to assume that the writer of that note was Black when so many whites also live in the neighborhood.
If you review the comments to the article, no one even mentions race.

The tag in the article says Shepherd Park. How many young, white hipsters and yuppies are moving to Shepherd Park? It is a quiet residential area comprised mostly of SFHs that doesn't have a lot of amenities or transit options. There's still too much of Central DC to gentrify for the hipster crowd to even pay much attention to Shepherd Park. That neighborhood, if anything, probably draws more white professional couples in their late 30s who are seeking to start a family than it does hipsters.
Someone who owns a home that borders Eastern Avenue, which sits directly across from the Blairs, probably wrote the note (if it's even real). The Blairs probably have some impact on Shepherd Park, but not enough to send most residents into a tizzy over gentrification. There aren't any poor, uneducated people to price out of Shepherd Park and the housing market isn't that liquid since most people stay there longer than they do in a neighborhood like Columbia Heights.
It's also worth noting that many Blacks--particularly property owners with high levels of educational attainment (basically what you have in SP)--are extremely welcoming of any persons who will raise their property values.
Interesting that it was Shephard Park. Mrs Moth grew up there and told me about when a 30 something white women moved in. She would sometimes park her car in front of the black neighbor's house and they were not very fond of that and let her know it.
In my area of Kensington, there is this "unwritten rule" that everyone gets the space in front of their house. Of course, friends of neighbors, contractors, and others do not know that and will park whereever. This is perfectly legal and consequently nobody makes a big deal about it.
