We are moving from Germany (3 year term coming to an end) back to DC area and we need a bit of advise. This time my hubby will be working in Bethesda near little falls park, south west of Bethesda center.
We are looking for a house to buy, about 1h commute from Bethesda max, monthly payments about $1500, green area, not too far from the French community (I think they may all be in Bethesda though).
Your housing budget is way way too low. Your budget won't get you anything like a "house" in a good part of DC - more like a studio apartment or 1-bedroom. You'll need to either dramatically increase your budget or look way out into the suburbs.
Germantown? It's not the best area of town, but there are worse places to live in the world. You might get lucky with a townhouse that needs work in Wheaton, Rockville or Gaithersburg. Doing a real estate search, I see some places in those areas at or below 250k. Keep in mind these areas aren't Beverly Hills or anything, so expect these areas to be older, to lack the latest and greatest in shopping/entertainment, to have more minorities (that matters to some people), but like I said, there are worse places to live in the world.
Well that is the thing, with the limited budget I am not sure they can afford a house. I don't think they have a clue the COL in the area, or the cost to purchase a house. I see sticker shock coming. Especially in Bethesda. They will be lucky to rent an apartment in thier limited budget.

They can definitely find something in their price range within an hour commute to Bethesda though. They didn't say they wanted to live *in* Bethesda. It may not be the most appealing area, but there are options available.
Aoutch!! Yes. We have a hard time with the rent there. Could go higher, but the idea of paying more than 2000 just cannot compute.
A greener area is def better for us, so outside of bethesda. Well, I only drove through once... so maybe I need to give it an other try.
So I just found North Potamac. Is the traffic there also crazy to bethesda?
Thanks a lot everyone!! Great info in a short time...
