I have signed my lease thanks God. Right now, I need to buy a second hand car and do not know anything about car purchasing in US. Is there any reliable places in DC that I can look for?
I am not asking for pricing. I am asking about the place, I am afraid of schemes. Also, what obligations can I expect as a car owner in DC? I mean, other than gas, what about other charges? How much is the insurance? Is there any monthly taxes for owning a car? and where do you guys usually go to change the oil and filter?
I might sound silly asking all these questions. But, I hope you understand that I must have a car and would like to know the cost approximately...
Since you are new to US and car buying-I hate buying cars start by looking at Carmax.com for prices and options.
May not be the cheapest but they have a set price and good reputation. Not sure what the sales tax situation is when you buy in VA or MD and license in DC.
If you live inside DC proper, check out DC Department of Motor Vehicles' website for more information on title and registration. You can also find out about residential parking permits, which you'll most likely need in order to park your car in your neighborhood.
Oil and Filter is easy and affordable (<$50), there are lots of chain auto-shops that specialize in oil/filter change (such as Jiffy Lube, VA Tire and Auto..).
As far as sales tax is concerned, the dealer should be able to charge you the right amount based on your residency.
Auto insurance is pretty painless and you can obtain that online. Geico, and esurance are some of the popular sites. While you're about to close on a car, just ask the sales person to lent you his computer so you can have proper insurance before you pull out of the lot.
Blondey, would you update us? I am definitely interested in hearing your course of action and experience in the situation! I have been without a car for years, now, but might buy one within the year. I am clueless on how to execute this armed with information and savvy!
