They need to. The one in Georgetown is not metro accessible.
Too bad Apple is probably on its way down now. I think its best days are behind it, but we'll see. Being a top tech company for decades straight ain't easy... especially when your visionary dies.

There's one right above Pentagon City metro station. I don't see a need for an Apple store in downtown DC especially when it has an uncertain future.

Uncertain future?? Downtown is on its way to full build out in the next 10 years probably. Pretty soon the only new structures in or near Downtown will be from tearing down existing buildings. Which is exactly why it makes sense that Apple would look at Carnegie, that building isn't going anywhere, so why not try and use it. Apple was already in talks to open at City Center a couple years ago so there's obviously interest in that part of town.
This would be a Flagship store btw in other words the stores in closest proximity would play second fiddle to this location, if it ever did really happen. Georgetown and Pentagon seem to be the closest to that location.

I'm pretty sure nonsense meant Apple has an uncertain future. At least that's how I read it.

Well if so, they would probably prefer this location as a flagship, then maybe leave Georgetown. Either way I still see the company having a strong retail presence for another decade plus.

As long as no one new comes in and crushes them the way Blackberry got crushed by Apple. All it takes is one game changing innovation from another company.
I went to the grand opening yesterday, and might I say that Apple Carnegie Library is one of the most gorgeous renovations I have ever seen. Anyone else check it out?
