I don't know if this would help or not, but New Carrollton is on the Amtrak Northeast Corridor and is served by both most Amtrak Regional trains and MARC Penn Line trains. There are no stops between Union Station and New Carrollton with either service. (Of course, MARC would be much cheaper.) By contrast, with the Metro you'd need to transfer from the Orange Line to the Red Line at Metro Center. On the other hand, Metro runs much more frequently than MARC and would probably be somewhat cheaper.
If your trip to Union Station involves taking Amtrak somewhere on the Northeast Corridor, you may be able to just go to New Carrollton and get on there.

Thanks for the responses - I really appreciate it. The trip was going to involve Amtrak but we found a one-way plane ticket out of BWI for a very good price at the last minute.
If you're coming from BWI, the Amtrak and Marta trains stop at the airport, so you would have a straight shot from BWI to Union Station. Check Amtrak and Marta for their schedules. There is a shuttle bus from the airport arrival level to the train station that takes about 5 minutes.
