My girlfriend and I are planning on getting an apartment in the spring and were wondering which neighborhoods or, if possible, specific apartment complexes would be best to rent in. I'm moving from Chicago in May and will be looking for an urban planning job and my gf is in grad school at American, so we're looking for a pet-friendly, 1 bedroom apartment (pretty standard place, nothing too specific needed) for about $1600/month. My gf wants her public transit commute to American to be under 30-45 minutes and I'm not sure where I'll be working, so some central location would probably be best. I'll have a car, so a building or neighborhood with a some parking would be a plus. We also are be city dwellers, so density is a pro not a con.

So far we're focusing our search on to neighborhoods like Foggy Bottom, Woodley/Cleveland Park, and Columbia Heights. But we're also open to living in the Mt. Pleasant area as well as the Navy Yard and possibly Shaw/U Street. Give our criteria, do these seem like plausible options and are there any neighborhoods or buildings in particular, you think we should focus our search down to? And if anyone knows about urban planning jobs in D.C., any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure how helpful I'll be but Cleveland/Woodley park would be great for your girlfriend and living near the redline is prety desirable. Not sure about the prices in that area. I live in the U/Shaw area, actually basically on the border of each at 9th and W at the Rhapsody. I like the area alot, a few minutes from U, the metro, Howard U, restaurants, etc. Definitely alot of people in the area so if you want pop. density, you'll have it. Parking is usually pretty doable in the area, it's tougher on the weekend because all the people hanging out at U street. Actually just checked and there is a place in the building, they're asking 1650. Might be a lead for you. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
