On the 'Guess the Climate' thread we've just had Zagreb, as close as I've seen to my ideal climate. Basically like our climate only the coldest winters we can realistically get, the hottest summers, and the sunniest year we'd realistically expect. The one afternoon I spent there I spent most of the time sheltering from a thunderstorm and not finding anybody who spoke any language I could speak so I never considered I was in my climate utopia, but here we are:

Zagreb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Plenty of thunderstorms, just the right amount of winter snow, sun equivalent to the best possible in this country, a warm but not-too-hot summer, and a good enough frequency of extreme weather to keep things interesting.

I give it a C as the winter is far too cold and dull. London's winters are actually sunnier as well.

It is actually very similar to NYC, except with much less sun during the winter. Summers are slightly cooler and there is somewhat less precipiation overall. I'd give it a B if winters were sunnier.
Final grade: C+

A very similar climate has been rated: New Suffolk (which is actually my hometown in a semi-fake name). Except New Suffolk has 2500 hours of sun a year not 1913 hours. Zagreb seems to change to spring (Feb and March are warmer) a bit quicker than New Suffolk but autumn comes quicker (Oct-Dec are quite a bit colder). My hometown gets about 35% more precipitation and 30% more sun. Would you give my hometown an A, too?

The winters are still rather chilly in Zagreb, but cloudier than New Suffolk. To still get a B with extra cloudiness, it would need milder winters. I gave New Suffolk a B, so Zagreb gets a C. Nothing that bad about its climate, just not all that great.

I didn't actually look at your thread first time round as I thought it was a fake climate but I've given it a B. I personally prefer Zagreb as though the extremes are more extreme I think the day-to-day temperature variation is less - Long Island would have more uncomfortably cold/hot/humid days than I'd prefer. It might sounds strange but for me your area actually gets too much sun - winters to me are supposed to be mostly cloudy and a bit depressing (though preferably not as bad as what we've just had here), else how else can you fully appreciate sunny days in the rest of the year?

What I like about Zagreb's climate is that basically it's an "optimum" version of what I'm already used to. Your climate would be too unfamiliar at first.

Growing up, I never thought of one season as a cloudy season or a sunny season. One appreciate the rest of the year for its warmth not it sun. Though my hometown is cloudier in the winter as you could tell by the numbers, but if you don't pay attention to the weather it's not extremely noticeable.

I still think Long Island and Zagreb look very similar temperature wise except maybe during the summer.

I certainly do here this year - the March sunshine values have just passed three times the February total and the sun's still shining

The averages may be similar between the two places but I expect Zagreb sticks to the averages more closely than Long Island (unless being coastal gives it a sufficiently different climate to the rest of the northeast?) so less frequent uncomfortable extremes at either end of the year.

I mentioned their climate was basically an optimum version of ours, and this year that may be more true than most; we had the relatively cold winter and the long-range forecast (though I don't know why I take that much notice of them as they are wrong as often as they are right) is for a warm, sunny yet thundery summer.

A-
Both the summers and winters are nice, but they could be a little bit cooler. No real complaints, though.

I couldn't find a huge difference outside of summer for either place. Long Island has a bit more extremes, but not that much. For example, here's Jan 2008 in both places (similar averages)

History : Weather Underground

and in Zagreb:

but both place can get cold winter months and warm ones:

History : Weather Underground

and if you check Jan 2010 for both places using the site, you'll see Zagreb got slightly more extreme cold.
