BBC reports 1.5 m of ice (almost 5 ft of ice). They say that trees have fallen over. They also say that "The actual hailstones were relatively small, less than 1cm in diameter, and nothing like the golf-ball sized hail seen at times in severe storms in the US."

I really like the BBC, they have reasonably decent reporting. But having seen hailstorms in TX and Kansas, I feel a bit put on that there could be that much ice with tiny hail. Maybe it's just the skeptical times we live in.

The hail has likely "drifted" into those depths. Similar things have happened here in the past where the hail is carried down hill along with rain water & where it ends up the hail piles up quite deep.

This was the result of a hailstorm in the steep streets of Valletta

I'm guessing it has to be carried by water or as the poster above stated, "drifted" in deposits that large. Though it is a tad strange to see absolutely nothing on the roofs nearby...

Yes, the initial hail melted and the rest of the hail washed into big piles. It's still an astonishing amount of hail, though,

Guadalajara is about a mile above sea level.
