Last week's rains and isolated thunderstorms in L.A. were not caused by monsoons but by a cut-off upper level low. My guess is that's it's more unlikely to happen in June but still possible. It would be major news in L.A. for a day or two but people would forget about it afterwards.
I suspect those out of California would have trouble understanding how unusual that is. Many in the east wouldn't realize how dry California is in the summer. Some type of Pacific frontal system? hit the Bay Area with substantial rain (1-2") in June 2011, I think it got a lot of attention along the West Coast. Harder for a system like that to reach further south in the summer.

Yeah, I remember that- they had to postpone my friend's high school graduation ceremony because it was booked at an outdoors park with no covers in the seating area on a Saturday (no one expects rain in June) til the following week. The family had already booked plane tickets to England that Tuesday so she had no choice but to miss her own graduation ceremony. It was a pretty big downpour in the afternoon so there was no way they could have gone through and all the indoor venues were booked for the next day. She was bummed about missing her graduation but did get over it.
As for making news, it was in the news and the talk of the town for a day or two but then people forgot about it afterwards (this was before I became really interested in climate/weather). In fact, I didn't even think about it until you brought it up in the thread. I don't think people would EVER forget a tornado in NYC.

Tornadoes in NYC aren't exactly unprecedented, the city has had 7 of them since 2007.
EF1 (Staten Island) - August 8th, 2007
EF2 (Brooklyn) - August 8th, 2007
EF1 (Bronx) - July 25th, 2010
EF0 (Brooklyn) - September 16th, 2010
EF1 (Queens) - September 16th, 2010
EF0 (Queens) - September 8th, 2012
EF1 (Brooklyn) - September 8th, 2012
Even still, a tornado striking Times Square would definitely make the most news, since it's Times Square. Although, to me, June snow in Minneapolis would be the most impressive from a meteorological standpoint.

Quite impressive; I didn't know that NYC got so many tornadoes.......
Has one ever hit Manhattan before?
Note that unlike the interior of the country, and like New England, most tornadoes were summer or early September, when thunderstorm activity is highest here and the most humid air available. (The early September peak corresponds to max sea temperatures).

Could a tornado theoretically strike downtown San Francisco?
Wow- I never would have thought there could be that much tornado activity in NYC.
neither did I.
