Here it ended yesterday, IE 13 October. This resulted in a frost-free period of 167 days.

This is quite comparable to places worth comparing, like Ann Arbor and Lansing, Michigan.

That system of Growing season ending on the first negative temperature would be strange in some parts of Southern Hemisphere like New Zealand, some parts of Australia and Patagonia, because of the summer freezes.

I love living in a place with a year round growing season .

Though on topic, Flagstaff's growing season ended last month, and Prescott's should be wrapping up

Forgot about the "free" period between. What do you guys use as frost temp? Our NWS uses 36°F

As far as Freeze Free.. Western Massachusetts (Pittsfield) had 138 Freeze free days. That's on the shorter side of things. May 10th there was a freeze. Sounds about right having only 4-5 months of growing season for interior.. About 6 months for coast.

Whats crazy is that "growing" and "yields" mean 2 different things. I really only get 2-3 months of yields. Growing starts in May but things don't blossom and ripen till July really. Then by September things slow down anyway.

Yeah sorry. Frost is used meaning a freeze in British English. So 32F. 36F is a ground frost. But yes, we use 36F.

But we don't use that definition at all normally defining the growing season. UK, Finland, Sweden and Norway use the growing period as the time when the mean temp is permanently above 41F. This can only be disrupted by a hard frost (25-28F).

Realistically thinking, even if the growing period lingers, you can't actually grow like wheat after mid September. Or tomatoes or whatever you have in your garden.

I used the US definition just for comparison's sake.

I didn't see nei's town on the list for MA,
a bit surprised as it seems to be a frost hollow.

Growing season still hanging in my area, mostly due to
being near the lake.
Places right the lake shore and in Toronto UHI
get first frost in early November, sometimes late November,
other years early October.

Lowest temp so far was 2C.

Yeah, Lakes and Coasts will be delayed a bit this yr due to their warmth.

Looks like nei went below freezing on the 11th so growing season ended there. Couple of likely frosty mornings 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th.
