As you may know, The NWS provides observations every hour. I always wondered why if personal weather stations can give us readings every 5 minutes or every minute, why can't NWS provide that as well? Many things can be missed in between the hours.

There is a standalone project called MADIS. You can read some more about this here:

IEM :: High Frequency METAR Obs

NCEP Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS)

The NWS is not internally processing the 5 minute data for AWIPS, nor relaying it over their standard data services. So while they will continue their hourly reports, there is a solution... An awesome one...

IEM now provides the 5-10 minute reports! Think about snowstorms.. You don't know exactly when the snow started with hourly reports but now you can see when.

Or how about temp drops in Thunderstorms? Like here.

Wichita Kansas 2 days ago had a Thunderstorm. Temp dropped from 97°F to 86°F within 7 minutes.

With the NWS hourly report you miss that

There's a couple ways to retrieve this ...

First way.. Just change the state abbreviation AND the station code letters in this link and it will get you there. There's also a drop down box for when you are in that specific state

IEM :: Observation History

Second way .. Use this link. Choose a State ASOS from the drop down box. Then click "Switch Network" on the right of the drop down box. Then next page choose "Observation History"

IEM :: Site Locator

Now you have access to the weather and temps every 5 minutes or so. Sometimes 10 or 15 or even 30. But better than the hourly if you want to know the at the moment OBS.

I think that we get updated every 15-20 minutes (or less?). Not sure about other countries.

That's the smart thing to do. Not sure why NWS doesn't want to do it.

Kinda sucks to have more to scroll down with to find something but pretty cool to have available.

I been meaning to start this thread for a week now. Finally got around to it.

Nice. It's about time, I always hated hourly reports, way too much can happen between reports. And it'd be nice to see true daily averages, not just high+low.

NP. They only started adding it couple months ago. I cannot wait for winter which will be SO KEY during snow events. Remember those graphs of rainfall per minute or 5 minutes? I always wondered how that was being retrieved. I figured if someone had it available they should be able to grab the obs as well.

When I saw it I got as exited as well. I guess only weathernuts and geeks would. lol General public doesn't care so the hourly is sufficient enough for them I guess.
