Avoid events that are generally pretty localised, like tornados.
I'm especially interested if there have been any blizzards that affected only part of a city. For instance, it was 1C and heavy rain at one end of the city, and -1C and heavy snow at the other. (Although I'm not especially interested in something like an uninhabited mountain that is technically within city limits getting a lot of snow).
November 9-14, 1996. Chardon, Ohio (eastern Cleveland metro): Over 70 inches (177cm) of snow. Akron-Canton Regional Airport (a little bit south of Cleveland): 2 inches (5cm) of snow.
Also notable is May 2, 2013, when Cottage Grove, Minnesota had 8 inches (20cm) of snow on the ground and downtown St. Paul just 11 miles (18km) to the northwest had absolutely nothing.
My city tends to experience this. Heavy rain and hail at one part of the metro, and pretty much no rain at the other part.
