What I can never understand is how stations are at the airport. I dont care if its on the lawn or installed with a fan, Do you know the amount of heat planes and runways produce? Its not natural heat and the wind pushes all that "unnatural" heat around.

Here's a tweet from Hartford

^^ don't think it makes a difference. Heathrow Airport for example is not always the hottest station in the UK despite being located at an airport. Also, the hottest ever UK temp was recorded in rural Kent, while the next highest was recorded at a large park in south-west LOndon.

And if it doesn't make a difference that's even more interesting to me and impressive. How can something (an area) generate that much heat (over 110°F) and not affect a thermometer. I had my station 5 feet above my roof and was getting crazy high readings. I assume the fan they have takes care of the "false heat".

I'd love to hear Dan from NWS (kamsack) take on this.

And while they're at it, they need one for Brooklyn.

Not sure, but the fact that the two highest temperatures recorded in the UK both occurred in parks/rural areas suggests to me that it doesn't have that big of an impact. I believe Heathrow airport has the warmest average highs in the UK but is not always the hottest station - for example, during the most recent 'heatwave', the hottest place in the UK was actually a small village. Yes, an explanation from a meteorologist would be helpful.

Don't forget that airports being a massive artificial open expanse of land, with no buildings or trees nearby, will have far greater movement of air, regardless of the tarmac/concrete & any heat that may come from the planes themselves (though I don't really imagine any of the weather stations are that close to the runways for that to have any effect)... The main problem I have with with airport stations is that they will always record far lower minimum temperatures, for the very same reasons, so are not that representative of the areas they cover...

Nice catch. Usually airports have letter codes to associate themselves with. Didn't know it was a Heliport.

Take a look where this new NYC station is located.

Didn't realize it was on the water nor that there was a heliport there. I thought it was closer to the World Trade Center...not that that's super far from the actual site, but it's not right on the water.
