Sheffield Summary August 2020

August was a month of two quite different halves - first half being warm, fairly sunny and dry.
The second half was very cool, and extremely unsettled. So much rain fell that it was one of the wettest augusts on record.
The late August bank holiday weekend was the coldest on record.
Overall it was much wetter, cloudier (exact figures not available yet) and milder than average.
August followed one of the cloudiest July on record, as can be seen with its abominable figure of 117 hours of sun.

Data for all of 2020 so far.

Daily observations for August 2020.

This Summer has been rather mild compared to recent summers.(Coolest summer since 2014, only very slightly cooler than 2016 though.)

Still clearly above average compared to the 1981-2010 normal.

Turned out to be a good summer. This August was also quite warm very sunny and very dry, but it was a weird temperature pattern across the state. Just to the south of the Chicago area temps were actually below average.

Sucked even worse than June and July with no rain and almost everyday was above normal on temps. 8" total rain since June 13th.

Arlington, VA:

Max high: 93F (Aug 27 & 28)
Min high: 77F (Aug 16 & 31)
Avg high: 87F

Max low: 79F (Aug 2)
Min low: 66F (Aug 16, 17, 30)
Avg low: 72F

Precipitation: 8.73 inches (much of it around Isaias & Laura remnants)

Overall the most notable aspect would be the lack of high-end heat. It's rare for August to top out at 93.

August was less than 2 F above normal this year. Average high of 84F, and low of 65 F. Highest max was 95 F, minimum low was 57 F. It is the textbook definition of normal august weather.
