First, I'd like to say that I am so very glad CD now has a wedding forum ;p
I am getting married in August and will be sending out invites soon. I know ettiquette says that you should hand address the invites, it makes them personable. As much as I understand that, what if you don't have the best handwriting? It's not bad but it's not superb. And my fiance's...well bless his heart, but from what i've seen, it probably would be best if he stayed away from an invitation. I should also add that we do not have the inside envelope, just the outer one & of course one for our RSVP that has our returned address on it and no extra money for a calligrapher, which IMO, isn't that impersonable to? Anyway...
So my question would be if you recieved an invititation to a wedding with a label addressed to you and your SO, would you be offended?
I wouldn't be offended if I got an invite addressed with a label, but I'd sooner stick a knife in my eye than do it myself. Then again, my invitations were the regular printed kind (raised print like a business card), not embossed, which they are supposed to be. I think everybody makes concessions.
I would rather see a handwritten address in mediocre handwriting than have a label.
If you decide not to handwrite them however, I would highly suggest printing them directly on your envelopes. Labels just scream junk mail to me.
Another thing I've heard of girls doing if they don't mind taking the time is to print in a light gray directly on the envelopes amd then trace over it with a pen. I'm sure that would take a great deal of effort, but I bet it would look lovely!
Thank you for all your advice! I thought of the tracing thing too and printing on the envelope and not using labels, we just don't have a reliable printer. May be i'll find a font I like and practice tracing this weekend.
You definitely need to work in batches! If you do end up printing (using a printer) on envelopes, I know a site where you can download very pretty fonts that are based on real handwriting.
Fourteen years ago we hired a caligrapher to write out the envelopes. Using mailing labels wasn't easy to do back then, nor was it done very often. Both I and my now husband have atrocious handwriting (I have to print everything or else it's not readable). I didn't want our beautiful invitations to be ruined by our terrible handwriting. Nowadays I think we would probably use some sort of computerized system to print labels/envelopes.
Like Julia said, work in batches. Not sure how big your wedding is but if you do 20-30 a night you'll be done in less than a week in all likelihood!
It'll be the same way when it comes to all those thank you cards!
Oh my...and it's not just the addressing on those, it is the writing the thank you, which I already do often i guess it would be good practice come to think of it! I'd say about medium size, roughly a 100 guest list.
I guess it just feels formal so you should write in a pretty cursive, but that doesn't matter to much right?!
