Our son is getting married next year and I've been helping his fiance with the wedding plans. We've been looking online for nice, cheaper wedding favors to give out to guests. There are TONS out there, but some of them are totally useless wedding mementos.
I think it would be nice if we could find something locally that could be made by someone (us, or someone else), that wouldn't be tossed in the garbage or left on the tables at the reception.
Any ideas what I might get someone to make or that I could find in local (craft or otherwise) stores? Something that won't just sit and collect dust or be eaten up in two seconds (monogramed chocolate kisses, etc)
The last wedding I was at, each place setting had a box with two chocolate truffles, one milk and one dark chocolate. People ate them as the evening progressed. Beyond that, favors are not something I've seen in quite some time, and really find it an unnecessary expense for all the reasons you already listed.
My brother had chocolate bars and replaced the labels with him and his wife and the last name. When I get married I am making CD's with the music that will be played either at the ceremony or the reception, like processional, dance with my husband and my dad, etc.
We are doing home made fudge as the groom is a total chocoholic. I ordered small 2x2 inch silver boxes on line. Got 200 for $50 I think. Then we are making the fudge and using a small heart cookie cutter to cut them out. Found small plastic bags at Hobby Lobby to put them in and then into the box. The box is being tied with a black ribbon to match the colors of silver and black. They look very pretty. Can't make the fudge until closer to the last minute, but have it all worked out so it shouldn't be a big hassle.
I would rather our guests eat the favors then give them something that will collect dust. The fudge is a personal thing and will be fairly cheap for us to do.
For the last wedding I went to, the bride's father had recently passed away. There was a card on the table saying that instead of spending money on favors, they'd made a charitable donation to the American Cancer Society in his name. I thought that was pretty sweet.
We got married in Hawaii and gave out chocolate covered macadamia nuts, Hawaiian themed luggage tags, and Hawaiian themed soaps. My best friend gave out coffee and cookies from one of the places that she and her husband had their first date. My cousin gave out jelly beans because her and her husband first bonded over jelly beans. When I got to weddings - I like getting food as a favor. I'll eat food.
