My husband will be working near the airport in West Palm Beach. We have been looking at Boca Raton, Wellington, and Jupiter for possible places to live. However, a friend recently mentioned the Stuart area. It is about an hour drive according to mapquest which isn't great but could work if we really love the area. But also not really workable during peak commute.

That being said, my husband would likely be commuting off peak for shift work, 5 or 6a for day shift and 2/3p for afternoon shift which could make it workable. Anything I should know about traffic on this route that isn't obvious for someone new to the area that would make this commute too long?

Also, anything to share about the Stuart area? I've never been, but my friend goes there all the time (family has a winter home there) and absolutely loves it.

Stuart has a nice downtown area with boutique shops and restaurants. The beaches are nice and probably less crowded than most Palm Beach County beaches. Between the St Lucie River, Indian River Lagoon, and the Atlantic Ocean, the whole area is surrounded by water, so there are lots of activities to enjoy on the water. Jensen Beach is next door and also has a little downtown with restaurants and bars.

Beaches are less crowded but also consider they are significantly smaller too! Bathtub beach in Stuart is closed more than its open due to erosion issues.

Bathtub is one small beach in the area. Plenty of beach room in the stuart/Jensen area. Manny’s assessment is pretty on.

While I don't have anything to share regarding Stuart, I would suggest you also take a look at Tequesta...

+1 on Tequesta, not crazy prices (for Palm Beach County) and really nice family feel. Don't get the grundge you will get in other areas of South Florida. Not too far from PBA.
