Hi Everyone- I've been lurking around here for a while now, trying to get the feel for the place. I am moving from chicago to the wpb area for a residency to finish my doctorate and will work for Palm Beach County (actual zip 33407). I know many of you have some great insight so please please please share!!!!! Ive been looking at real estate listings that have been suggested on this forum and craigslist- I am looking to rent a townhouse (2-3 bedroom) with a garage within a 30 minute commute from my work. It will be just me- I have one small dog and want an area that is relatively pet friendly, has some young professionals but not in the middle of the bar scene, and safe for both of us- Im willing to pay a little more for this but know there are some great deals to be had right now. Id like the rent at 1500 or less. Id also like to be within a 10 minute or so drive to the beach if possible. I know Jupiter has a pet friendly beach so I dont know if I should look there more than other places, as I dont mind the look of cookie-cutter subdivisions like abacoa, for my first year in the area. So...where should I specifically be looking? Ive heard Delray, Palm Beach Gardens, and Jupiter more than other places- some nice looking townhouses in Lake Worth but many on here have said its a ghetto? I can handle driving around and through rough patches- Chicago is the same- but I want a safe, guarded community to live in if thats whats necessary. Does anyone know how HOA work when renting the townhouses in these areas- included in rent or extra? I have a thousand more questions but right now I need a place to live and will go from there- I am just going to start calling the agents listed on craigslist and the other websites, tomorrow, unless someone has another suggestion to that! Ill be down there June 16 to look around...Thanks for your help- a lot of rambling but maybe I got the point across!

Abacoa is probably your best bet hands down.

I agree with the above. Palm Beach Gardens has nice rental communities as well. I believe HOA is paid by the owner and is just factored into the rental price.
