What do you know &/or believe is the best way for children to learn a second language &/or multiple languages... let me know your thoughts. I appreciate your feedback and time.

it isn't through once a week classes in elementary school and a feeble attempt to provide multilingual materials.

I think immersion would be best!

Most children learn languages easily.... it's adults that have problems doing so! LOL

The younger the child, the easier it will be for them to pick up languages. School helps, but if you can find other children around their age that speak whatever target language you wish for your child to learn, that would really help. It's not to say that they CAN'T learn from school, but it's just more fun to learn from a friend. Also, if it's Spanish, I recommend them watching Dora the Explorer which routinely offers words and phrases in Spanish.

As far as immersion, there's only so much you can do, really. Moving to another country would be ideal, but not always practical. :-)

Another comment - if it's Spanish, I do not recommend putting on the Spanish channels on TV.... most of the shows aren't exactly child-friendly. I know since I speak it fluently. Though they're fun to watch if you're an adult. :-)

I know that you are located in WPB but this really should be posted in the Education forum. You will get a lot more responses.

Immersion. Or get a housekeeper or nanny to live in who speaks that language. I had 8 years of French in school but it was not enough to be say, an interpreter or professional. you must live there.

One of the partners at my firm who has a nanny for his child was recently lamenting the "Spanglish" that his son is picking up, lol.

Instead of learning Spanish properly, he's learning English with an accent and with broken grammar!

It is actually quite normal for children to not pick up languages right away at the same time. Usually when they are taught more than one they don't begin speaking until a later age and will sometimes form sentences with more than one language.

In the case of the nanny.. it seems she is trying to talk to the kid in english :P

This has been my experience, but I think in the long run it is worth it.

A real prize would be to learn to write (as opposed to speak, listen, and read) fluently at a professional, publishable level in two languages. I think that would require double schooling during the grammar school years.
