LOL

I've always wondered the same question

It is down stream from Charleston, so maybe they just "thought" it was south of Charleston. It is also kind of odd that the West Side is north, East End south, and South Hills West.

thanks, that makes since Charleston in on the Northbank while South Charleston is on the southbank, it makes since that it had something to do with the river not direction.

You're welcome LOL

Of course now that South Charleston has annexed so much actually south of Charleston, the city looks a little kinda south now. The city actually plans on annexing all the way to the Lincoln County line which would be huge.

It's 'South' of 'North' Charleston, which was once also a separate town. The West Side is west of the Elk River. The East End was once the eastern part of Charleston city limits, and South Hills is on the Southern side of the Kanawha. See it's easy.

The entire state is seeped in fascinating history, Charleston and the surrounding area has a great amount on it's own.
Fort Hill (on the south side) was once the location of the Union Fort Scammon, Carriage Drive may be haunted by the ghosts of 2 prostitutes, and Port Amherst was the site of the hanging of a white man by a (gasp) black lynch mob. (from all accounts deservedly)
Google Ft Lee. or just pick a street name.

Do they no longer teach the 'official' version of WV History in Elementary school?

My guess is that, when the towns got their names, South Charleston was South of North Charleston. It still is. North Charleston is just an area within the city of Charleston, while South Charleston is a separate city. (It's run a lot better than the city of Charleston, IMHO)
