Our state government's answer for being "large and unwieldy" is, amazingly, to push to make it even larger and more unwieldy. Ever since Gaston and his rather strange wardrobe held court in Charleston, state government has been on a ceaseless quest to expand the bureaucracy. Mind you, our state actually has fewer people living in it now than it did when Gaston took office, and it operated better then than it does now or has since.

W.Va. Department of Health and Human Resources responds to audit * - News - Charleston Daily Mail - West Virginia News and Sports -

If the state's secretary of welfare, or what ever they call it now, can't manage that department, they need to find a new secretary.

Secretary Bowling is partially correct on this one. The DHHR needs to be broken up into different agencies again, not have seperate departments or bureaus. That is the way it was ran years ago when it was more efficient. As it currently operates, there are too many agencies under one umbrella so to speak.

Businesses are being forced to do more with less people. If someone can not make it run efficiently the answer is to find someone that can.

That statement doesn't ring true when dealing with bureaucracy.

In my opinion, it is especially true in the case of bureaucracies. You could take half the fat cats sitting around in Charleston, and 2/3 of the fat cats sitting around in the state Dept. of Education, and eliminate their positions, putting workers in the field in place with the same money, and the people of this state would be far better off.

I agree with you CT, but it takes the citizens of this State to force that change. However, must citizens are either content with the current setup, just too lazy to care or would rather direct their time, energy and resources to other things.
